Understanding Filter Dimensioning: Beyond the Basics

Our range of filters, as shown below, offers various sizes to accommodate flow rates from 0 m³/h to up to 2000 m³/h, for both hygienic and industrial applications. These flow rates are based on the standard viscosity of water (1 cps).

However, in real-world applications, fluids can vary greatly in viscosity and dirt content, which significantly impacts the required filter size and type. A higher viscosity fluid will flow more slowly through the same filter as compared to water, potentially necessitating a larger filter size or a different configuration to achieve the desired flow rate without causing excessive pressure drops or premature filter clogging.

Moreover, the amount of particulate matter or ‘dirt’ present in the fluid is a critical factor. A higher level of contamination requires more frequent scraping (cleaning) and may also call for a larger filter to handle the dirt load without a reduction in performance and keeping the differential pressure (ΔP) to a minumum.
